Watch How To Make Basic Cold Process Soap

Before you make this soap, take a few minutes to watch the video below for the basic method. For more detailed information see how to make cold process soap at home.

  1. Make sure the room you are making the soap in is well ventilated. Oil a plastic mold and then line it with greaseproof paper. If you are using a silicone mold you won’t need to line or oil it.
  2. In a good size stainless steel pan melt the olive, sunflower oil, and coconut oil over low heat.
  3. Put on protective eyewear, mask, apron, and long rubber gloves. Pour the mineral water into a plastic bucket. Slowly, add the lye, using a plastic spatula to stir until dissolved.
  4. Use two jam thermometers, one for the lye mix and one for the oil mix. Make sure you are wearing protective clothing. When both mixtures are between 140f (60c) and 120 F (49c) immediately pour the lye mix into the oils mixing with the spatula, stir continuously until well combined.
  5. Continue to stir until it has thickened enough, when a bit of the soap is drizzled over the top it leaves a line trace.
  6. Pour in the essential oils followed by the poppy seeds, stir thoroughly until they are evenly distributed.
  7. Pour the mixture into the mold that you prepared before.
  8. Cover the top with cardboard, and place a towel over it to keep it warm, then leave for 24 hrs in order for it to set.
  9. Line a wooden board with greaseproof paper, put some protective gloves on, and turn the soap out onto the board.
  10. Use a carving knife to cut the soap into chunky bars.
  11. Put them into a tray lined with greaseproof paper and leave for four weeks in a dark, warm, dry place.
  12. Turn them occasionally.

  1. Hi, on the bay soap. Which bay essential oil did you use. Where did you purchase your oils from. I’m having a hard time finding one that only says bay on it. I Love the recipe and can’t wait to try it.

  2. Hello,

Very excited to try this recipe. Two questions I’d be most greatful for your feedback on:
    1. Would it be safe to boil some bay leaves in the distilled water before hand and use for adding to the lye once cooled?
    2. Can you recommend any alternatives to sunflower oil?

Thank you so much for this!

    • Hi Monique, the bay leaf idea seems ok but I haven’t tried it before.
And you can definitely substitute oils in the recipe. My soap calculator and formulation guide has all the information you need including info on the best oils. Make sure you run the new recipe through the calculator because you may need to change the amount of lye.

  3. Hi Angela, I am so happy to find your site. I’ve been wanting to make soaps for my husband, and I found your recipe for men. I have a question… my mold capacity is 1200 grams. This recipe will not be enough for the mold I have. If I will double this recipe, how am I going to compute it? Thank you for your quick reply.

    • Hi Corrie
Your mold should be ok for this recipe as it is. The recipe has about 1000 grams and the ingredients do not have to reach the top. You would have an issue if the ingredients came to more than your mold capacity. Best of luck 😉
